40 years of KBS: the pick-by-light expert from Breisgau celebrates anniversary

KBS has been bringing light to order picking for 40 years

The company, which started in 1981 as an engineering office for industrial automation and test systems, has today developed into one of Europe’s leading suppliers of paperless picking systems for intralogistics.

The long history in the development of computer hardware and software formed the basis for the successful development of the company into today’s pick-by-light specialist.

From the control box to the intelligent order-picking system

KBS developed its first pick-by-light system in 1993. “At that time, each module was still a separate, small control box,” recalls Joachim Beck, one of the founders of KBS along with Wolfgang Schenk and Wolfgang Klein. “Today, the intelligence is integrated into the system itself,” J. Beck continues. “Based on this first system, we have steadily driven development. For example, the intelligence of the compartment displays was constantly increased and a proprietary bus system for communication was developed.”

Many years of experience and technical know-how for individual customer solutions

Early on in the development of the system, the company focused on a high technical level, industrial-grade design, customer-specific adaptations and maximum flexibility – this quickly established itself and has proven itself over the years. “Continuously developing our PickTerm Flexible system to meet the requirements of today and tomorrow has driven us ever since,” adds Joachim Beck.

Today, the system offers modern solutions with sensor technology, graphic displays, touchscreens and many other technical modifications that offer the customer additional flexibility and new possibilities to efficiently master the ever more complex requirements.

Pick-by-light solutions from KBS are used worldwide in a wide variety of industries such as automotive, retail, publishing, logistics, pharmaceuticals, lifestyle and many more to optimise storage and picking processes.
“We see ourselves as a partner for system solutions and work closely with customers and general contractors,” says Michael Weiser, Head of Sales.

With years of experience in intralogistics, a high level of technical know-how and a great passion for innovative developments, as well as committed and competent employees in all company divisions, KBS Industrieelektronik has been able to win many renowned customers and partners over the past four decades. The company would like to take this opportunity to thank all of them for numerous exciting projects and the valuable, long-standing cooperation.
